Learning approach

The learning approach is built around understanding the rules and what’s happening around you. It acknowledges knowing what to do isn’t enough and encourages learners to understand how they are feeling and what impact that could have.

What lessons look like

Identify

Each lesson begins with a brief discussion about previous learning giving us an opportunity to reflect on progress and identify any areas that need further development. Learners are provided with a Cortex Method handbook allowing them to track their progress, understand the skills being developed and take an active role in shaping their learning journey.

Focus

Together we'll decide what to focus on next building understanding before introducing new challenges. Lessons are designed to help learners understand not only what to do, but why they're doing it before applying that understanding in real driving situations.

Reflect

Every lesson finishes with a debrief reflecting on what went well, what has been learned and what to focus on next ensuring each lesson builds purposefully on the last.

Expected outcomes

Learning with Cortex is designed to build both skill and understanding. Learners are encouraged to understand why they are doing it and how it fits into the bigger picture. This deeper level of understanding helps driving feel more logical, predictable and easier to apply in new situations.

Mistakes are treated as learning opportunities rather than failures with lessons focused on finding solutions and building confidence. The process is collaborative, with instructor and learner working together to develop the awareness, understanding and judgement needed to become a safe, independent driver.
